Forest of yellow

While I was at Picnic Point last weekend, I came across a section of woods that was completely yellow.

In some spots, it looked as if the leaves were producing their own light.

It went on for dozens of yards. Yellow maple and birch trees as far as you could see.

The beauty is temporary though. Soon, they’ll all be on the ground.

Peak colors at Picnic Point

I went hiking along Picnic Point this afternoon.

The foliage there seemed to be at peak autumn color.

As I was hiking through the 129 acre preserve, I couldn’t help be be grateful to the people who years ago, had the vision to keep this wild place in its natural state.

October blossoms

I don’t think of late October as being a good time for flowers.

But when I visited Olbrich Gardens this afternoon, I saw some gorgeous autumn blossoms, like these zinnias.

Fields of gold

Last weekend, while hiking at Lake Kegonsa State Park, I discovered this golden soybean field bordering the park.

It’s funny how an unexpected scene, completely different from your original destination, can give you the best photos of the day.

I saw my first glimpse of autumn while out hiking today: a maple tree, that decided it was time to start changing color.

Green still hanging on

Despite the fact that the majority of trees in my neighborhood have turned colors and lost their leaves, the maple in my backyard is still hanging on to most of its green color.

Maybe the tree just wanted to dress up as a summer maple this Halloween?

Peak colors at Governor Dodge

I took a day trip to Governor Dodge State Park the other day, where the autumn colors seemed to be at their peak.

The partly cloudy skies made for some bad photo lighting at times, but if I waited long enough, my patience was usually rewarded.

Dancing prairie grass

On a recent hike at Cherokee Marsh, I came across a view that rivals traditional autumn color scenes.

The prairie grass, back lit by the sun, and moving from the afternoon’s strong breeze, seemed to be dancing in the spot light. Made me wish I had a video camera.
