I’ve noticed the sun setting along the railroad tracks at the corner of Fair Oaks and Thurber avenues before, and wished I had my camera. It happened to be in the car when I drove by today.

At the former site of the city’s Milwaukee Road station, a passenger train sits dormant.
I went to Olbrich Botanical Gardens to check out their annual Holiday Express display. I found the look of wonder on most of the children’s faces the best thing about the exhibit.
What is it about trains that we find so fascinating? Even when I see empty tracks I’m compelled to wonder (and take a photo). Where to they lead? What’s around the bend?
An excursion train with Milwaukee Road Engine 261 (an old steam locomotive) ran from Milwaukee to the Wisconsin Dells today.
