Golden ferns: A cautionary tale
As I hiked along the trail Sunday, I saw these yellow colored ferns, beautifully lit by the sun, a ways off the trail. In order to avoid ticks, I usually don’t hike into the underbrush, and stick to the groomed trails. But we’ve had some cold weather, and the season is winding down. It’ll be OK, I thought.

Mourning the fallen
It’s hard not to feel a bit sad when the leaves start falling, foreshadowing the loss of beauty and warmth. I know there’s always hope for brighter times to come. But for now, mourning the beauty that’s lost seems fitting.
Fork in the trail
There are always paths to choose, even when out on a simple hike. Which way should I go? Which option is the better one? When hiking or in life, the choices are not always crystal clear.
Wilco at the Sylvee
On Friday night I saw the band Wilco perform at The Sylvee here in Madison. Wilco is one of my favorite bands, this was the eighth show of theirs I’ve been to. Every concert I’ve seen them perform has ALWAYS been fantastic, and Friday night was no exception.

On Sunday evening I was part of the drum circle at the Olbrich Park solstice celebration. It was amazing. I took a short photo break from drumming just after the bonfire was lit and people started dancing. After the fire died down to a safe level, the crowd was invited to put their written wishes for the coming year into the fire.
Happy solstice! May all your solstice wishes come true.
Bleeding hearts
The bleeding hearts in my yard carry a lot of symbolism for me this year, for a few reasons. They’ve lasted longer than expected this spring, which is fittingly symbolic as well. Hoping for brighter days ahead as these blossoms fade for the season.
