Looking back, the thing I enjoyed the most during my trip to Washington D.C. (other than hanging out with my father) was the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. And my being a librarian didn’t have anything to do with that. While we were waiting for the library to open, I was thinking we probably wouldn’t be there longer than an hour. We ended up staying for most of the morning and into the lunch hour!
The neoclassical architecture inside the building is just gorgeous. A lot of our time there was spent just soaking in all of the elements of the building. The exhibits the library had were also excellent. We really enjoyed the American Treasures exhibit, From the Home Front and the Front Lines.
Speaking of the front lines, the previous day Dad and I found a copy of my Grandfather’s (Theodore Bloy) World War I draft card at the National Archives. That was another pleasant surprise. We figured it would take us several hours to track that down. Thanks to the very helpful librarians there, we were able to finish our research very quickly. Aren’t librarians great?
