While camping last week, I took a couple of day trips to see nearby sights. One was to Lake of the Falls County Park in Iron County.

Back in the great outdoors
Last week I was camping in the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest, one of my favorite places to experience the outdoors.
Dreamcatcher
When I walked into my bedroom this late this afternoon, I was struck by the shadows created by the window blinds and the dreamcatcher hanging over my bed.
The julia butterfly
At the Olbrich Gardens butterfly exhibit today, one particular julia butterfly was very patient with me. While most of the other butterflies in the dome fluttered about, this one just stood there, posing like a model for several minutes.
Kitchen remodel: almost done
My new kitchen is almost complete! Monday, the counters arrived, and yesterday the plumber was here to hookup the sink and dishwasher. Yes, I actually have running water in the kitchen!
I say almost complete because I’m waiting for the the cabinet pulls (which are pewter). They should look nice with the appliances. And of course I need to paint.
Balla Tounkara et Groupe Spirit
I’ve been meaning to try some concert photography and last night’s performance of Balla Tounkara et Groupe Spirit at the free Fête de Marquette festival in Madison provided the perfect opportunity.
The band is from Mali and played some very infectious afro-pop. I enjoyed their music a lot. At times when I was shooting, I had to remind myself to stay still for a good shot. It was really hard not to move while they were playing.
Yellow lilies
The surprise perennials at my house just keep blooming. These lilies are about the last of the blooms for this year.
Everything but the kitchen sink (and counter)
The contractor was at my house today to install the woodworking trim and mount the microwave. When I got home from work, I was really impressed with how nice everything looked.
Purple clematis
R.I.P. Michael
When I think of the life Michael Jackson, it’s hard not to consider him a tragic figure. With the announcement of his death today (at the young age of 50), even more so. But when I consider Michael Jackson, what comes to mind are not the struggles he had in life, not his eccentricities, but some of the excellent music he made. In particular, some killer songs on his albums Off The Wall and Thriller.
I’ve always loved the simplicity and intrigue of “Billy Jean”, my favorite song of his. Thank you Michael, and may you rest in peace.
