Structures revealed

One of the great things about winter is being able to see the wonderful structure that trees have, like this beautiful, big old cottonwood.

Went on a frigid Christmas day walk yesterday (7°F), and I was fascinated by the ice formations on the surface of a nearby creek.

When it’s a cold, grey day, and the creek you’re hanging out on is starting to freeze over, a group nap makes things a little better.

Seeing a northern cardinal showing off that vivid red is a welcome sight in the middle of winter, when bright colors are so rare.

Our first major storm of the season brought almost 8 inches of wet, heavy snow to Madison. It was hard work shoveling, but it sure looks pretty.

When the wind pushes the thin ice, forming along the lake’s edges, into the shore.

While on a walk, I found a thin layer of ice on the Vilas Park Lagoon and some frost on the boardwalk. Winter is coming.
