Bridging the trail

June 26, 2021Bicycling, RailroadsJonathan

View of a recreational trail leading into the distance, through the many girders of a bridge

I spent some time photographing the former Chicago & North Western Railway bridge on the Great River State Trail. The bridge crosses the Black River, just before it flows into the Mississippi.

Boardwalk recreational trail leading through a girder bridge and a view of the river it crosses

Closeup of a large girder cutting diagonally across the image with a blue sky background

While I love biking on this trail, the railroad fan in me is a little sad that trains no longer pass over this wonderful bridge.

Two large angled girders frame the view of a boardwalk recreational trail leading into the distance and the second half of the bridge
