Aurora borealis!

A green ribbon of light runs along the horizon as thin pillars of green and faint red reach upward. A tree in silhouette is on the side.

I missed the northern lights when they appeared in Southern Wisconsin last month, so I wasn’t about to miss the chance to see them last night. My first aurora sighting since 2004!

Thick lines of mostly green and some faint red reach up from the horizon under a starry sky. A grouping of clouds is seen above the horizon on the right half of the picture.

Thankfully, the clouds that were present for most of the day finished dissipating just after I started shooting.

My camera definitely picked up more vivid colors than I could see with my eyes — at the time, I didn’t see any reds at all.

A thick ribbon of green with some yellow runs along the horizon. At the end of the ribbon are thick pillars of strong green light ending with hints of red.

These were taken at Token Creek County Park, from 11pm until about 12:30am. If I hadn’t had to go to work this morning, I would have stayed out longer!

  1. Thanks for posting northern lights photos – good clear colors. Nice to see for old guys like me who don’t want to go out at night. – – But the flowers from daylight also are a delight – assures me that warmer spring days are coming. Thanks

  2. Thanks for the comment. It’s hard to put into words what it’s like to stand under the sky when the aurora is happening. “Magical” seems the most appropriate word. Hopefully, I won’t have to wait so long until I’m fortunate enough to be amazed by that sight again.
