Ableman’s Gorge

April 21, 2025Geology, LandscapeJonathan

A large, colorful rocky cliff with a line of pine trees along the top ridge. Blue sky and a few wispy clouds are above.

I did a little exploring in Sauk County over the weekend. Ableman’s Gorge State Natural Area.

The sun shines in a sunburst pattern, just over the edge of a rocky cliff. A large pine tree is in front of the cliff, and several trees are on the top ridge.

The edge of a rocky cliff slopes down to ground level. A few of turkey vultures fly through deep blue sky next to the cliff.

I was fortunate to be there at just the right time, for the sun to highlight the wonderful colors of the quartzite and sandstone of the cliff in the bottom photo.

The late afternoon sun shines on a large rocky cliff with pine trees at the top. The orange, red, and brownish grey colors are brightly illuminated by the sunshine.
