This past October, The New Pornographers were scheduled to perform here in Madison. But an emergency appendectomy for band’s bassist postponed the show until last night. When they walked onto the stage at the Barrymore Theatre and began playing, I knew waiting those four months was worth it. The band started off the show sounding energetic and tight with the opening songs “The Jessica Numbers” and “Use It.”
The six piece band (two guitarists, two keyboardists, bass, and drums) maintained that high energy level throughout the concert, even during the few subdued songs they played. One of my favorites of the night was the sweet and mellow “Streets of Fire.” The crowd favorite was definitely “Sing Me Spanish Techno,” another high energy song they played toward the end of the show.
There was one bad thing about last night’s show: two members, including Neko Case, were not able to join their fellow bandmates on the rescheduled tour. The other female band member, Kathryn Calder, did a good job filling in for Neko’s vocals — even getting the lead singer’s spotlight on “Bones of an Idol.” However, I missed Neko Case’s presence. “These Are The Fables,” my favorite song from the band’s most recent (and excellent) album, is sung by Neko and was absent from last night’s show. I can’t help but think The New Pornographers’ sound would have been even better, if those missing members had been along last night. I hope the next time the band comes around, they’ll be here with a full compliment.
While I didn’t get to the theater in time to catch the opening act of the three-band bill, I was impressed with the second band, Matt Pond PA. The reflective, indie-pop sound I heard from them last night, makes me want to buy their latest album. Matt Pond PA’s sound also benefitted greatly from a type of musician not usually found in a rock band, a cellist.
