I just returned from a camping vacation at the Northern Highland/American Legion State Forest in northern Wisconsin. Below is a picture from the Plum Lake Hemlock Forest State Natural Area. It’s a nice hike from where I was camping at Star Lake.

With its twenty campgrounds, beautiful north-woods scenery and wildlife, it’s one of my favorite places to be. As I approached my destination last Sunday, I traveled on what occurred to me is my favorite highway — Vilas County Highway N.

After driving through the tourist attractions of Eagle River, hitting that small, rural highway lined with pine trees is refreshing breath of fresh air. In fact when you go, don’t forget to roll down your window and let your nose drink in the delicious pine scented air. Also, keep an eye out for wildlife. I’ve seen the most wildlife while traveling on Hwy N than on any other road I’ve been on, including deer, foxes, coyotes and eagles.
