Fallout shelter

September 20, 2023Architecture, CityscapeJonathan

Looking up at the brick facade of an old building. A fallout shelter sign is next to a door with a lamp above it.

Sunset sequence

September 18, 2023Lakes, SkyJonathan

An orange sky with the sun setting through a few darker colored clouds. In the foreground is the pier of a lake with lamp posts and two benches.

The pier at Tenney Park, along Lake Mendota.

Glimpses of autumn

Maple leaves on a tree branch in the process of changing from green to red.

Leaves beginning to change color (and drop to the ground).

Pinks and blues

September 12, 2023Lakes, SkyJonathan

Streaky pink clouds and darker blue sky are seen above and reflected in the calm waters of a lake. Small dark clouds are just over the horizon on one side.

Yesterday evening along Lake Monona.

Imperfection’s worth

September 10, 2023Flowers, Insects, Nature, ThoughtsJonathan

Monarch butterfly feeding on a coneflower. The petals of the flower have brown spots, and are starting to shrivel up.

Even when a flower isn’t the prettiest, the butterfly finds nourishment there. Another lesson from Mother Nature.

Scenes from a night ride

September 7, 2023Bicycling, Cityscape, Insects, NightJonathan

A lamppost lights up a paved bike path, over a former railroad bridge. The path continues into the distance.

When it’s too hot to bike during the day, a night ride is just the ticket.

The Forevertron

September 5, 2023Art & CultureJonathan

Scrap metal sculpture of an egg shaped cage in the middle with two 'thruster arms' emanating from the cage toward the ground. At the bottom is a line up of a number of circular metal rings.

The Forevertron is the massive sculpture from Dr. Evermor that is the centerpiece of the park. According to the artist, he designed the Forevertron to launch himself, “into the heavens on a magnetic lightning force beam.”

Touching history

September 3, 2023TreesJonathan

Looking up from the base of a very large tree. A hand is resting on the bark, which is covered with deep, rough ridges and fissures.

I love the old cottonwood trees along the Edgewood Park & Pleasure drive. This giant has to have been around for at least 100 years.

Fantastical creatures

September 1, 2023Art & CultureJonathan

Closeup of a bird's head made out of various scrap metal pieces. In the background, out-of-focus, are other bird-like creatures.

The World of Dr. Evermor

August 30, 2023Art & CultureJonathan

Large sculpture made of scrap metal pieces. A tall tower with an egg shaped cage is in the center. Two other tall structures are next to the tower, surrounded by many other large and small pieces.

I’ve been meaning to visit Dr. Evermor’s Sculptpure Park for years. Finally did that last weekend. His work is so fascinating! I took a ton of photos. More to come…
