Lady Liberty returns

February 2, 2019Art & Culture, LakesJonathan

Top of the Statue of Liberty on Lake Mendota with the Red Gym in the background

40 years ago, a prank brought the Statue of Liberty to Madison. The joke was only the torch and the top of the head were visible, because the statue was too heavy for the ice and sank when it was placed on Lake Mendota. As part of a winter carnival, Lady Liberty appeared again this year.

Reflections of warmer times

January 31, 2019Hiking, ReflectionsJonathan

Trees and sky reflecting on a still pond

With temperatures dropping down to -26(f) the past few days, I’ve been easing my cabin fever by looking at photos I took when the weather was just a bit warmer. I captured this scene while hiking in Northern Wisconsin last September.

Another storm

A row of snow covered pine trees with the sun starting to shine through the clouds in the background

Second major winter storm we’ve had in five days. I give this most recent snowstorm a rating of 2.3/2. That’s two-point-three hours of manual labor and two ibuprofen.

Winter shadows

Small tree branches with the shadow of two tree trunks on the snow

One of my favorite sights of winter are the deep contrasting shadows bare trees make on fresh snow.

Winter again

January 20, 2019Lakes, WinterJonathan

Snow covered lake shore with waves of small snow drifts

A decent snow storm and bitter cold temperatures have brought winter back to southern Wisconsin — as it should be.

Grey and brown

forest of bare trees with dead leaves on the ground and a grey sky background

It’s been grey and brown for so much of the winter so far, that scenes like this are starting to look interesting to me.

Melted memory

January 8, 2019Reflections, WinterJonathan

Trees reflecting in a puddle from melted snow

That beautiful snow we got last week is all but a melted memory. Makes me wonder if we’ll reach snowshoeing levels of snow this winter in Madison? Sadly, we didn’t last year.
