Angry bird

While hiking at Cherokee Marsh, I came across a red-winged blackbird who was looking after the fledglings in his nest nearby. He was NOT happy I was around. Those birds have no fear, and will attack ANYTHING that threatens their nest.

I tried to capture him in flight as he kept dive bombing, while at the same time protecting my head from his attacks. Above is a composite of three of those photos.

Flight of the robin

At a local park today, there were quite a few robins hunting for worms in the grass. I spent about 15 minutes trying to get close, and capture a photo at the moment they flew away. Though a bit out of focus, this was the best shot I got.

Hawk at Olbrich

I went to Olbrich Gardens yesterday to find some proof that spring was actually happening (more on that later). First thing I saw was this hawk, hanging around one of the ponds.

There were quite a few people around, watching. I was amazed how close she was letting us get — hawks usually aren’t this tame.

Common loons

One of my favorite things about northern Wisconsin (where I just returned from camping) are the common loons that spend the summers there.

They’re beautiful and kind of elusive. They don’t like to get close to humans at all. But I was armed with a new telephoto lens I bought several months ago, and was determined to get some decent shots.
