Cohousing? Not so much

Several months ago I talked about the possibility of moving into a cohousing development next year. Unit costs are beginning to be finalized for the project and despite the goal for the development to be affordable, unit costs are WAY too high for my meager librarian?s salary. Consequently, I will not be moving into that cohousing project.

While the costs made it an impossibility for me, I was also having second thoughts about the whole cohousing concept. I’m not sure how much I would enjoy things like having meals in the common house on a regular basis. Perhaps it?s just a little too communal for me.

At least I?ll be able to continue to enjoy the antics of the neighborhood adolescents, like the group that decided to hang out for a couple hours in front of my condo this evening. Oh, what fun!

  1. Sorry the group picked the front of your place to hang out.
Bummer! Soon the weather will be colder and maybe that will chase them indoors somewhere -let’s hope. Meanwhile we’ve had our windows open a lot these days, and we keep getting a lot of traffic noise from 151, especially when the wind blows from the southwest. I guess no place is perfect.

  2. I’d highly recommend our neck of the woods if you could find the right sized place for your needs that fit your librarian’s salary. It’s a nice little neighborhood with great people and most of the kids in this neighborhood are too young to loiter.

Incidentally, can you share what the co-housing costs are?
I’m curious what those places are going to go for since they were supposed to be affordable, weren’t they?

  3. The latest cost projection has 2 bedroom units ranging from $235,000 to $277,000 (for 980-1200 square feet). To be fair, the project is selling the units at cost ? they are not making any profit. And truthfully, they are more affordable than other condo developments in the vicinity. That same price would get you a small, one bedroom condo in the Monroe Commons development (currently under construction).

My latest thought is I need to find a small bungalow, or cape cod house to buy. There are nice areas of the city where those can be had for reasonable prices.
