Sandhills are back

Another sign of an early spring, I saw my first sandhill crane of the season!

They were by themself, and seemed quite content to strut around and dig in the turf for something to eat, while I watched.

At one point, they stopped foraging, stood up straight, and began that wonderful sandhill crane call. It seemed like they were asking, “Hey! Any of my friends around here?”

They paused for a few moments, and went back to foraging.

  1. Where did you spot them? I’ve not yet seen or heard the pair that makes Kettle Pond their summer home.

  2. This was at Vilas Park two days ago. One of my photographer friends posted some photos of sandhills in the Madison area on Valentine’s Day!
