Venison for lunch

Female snowy owl perched on top of a deer carcass.

More snowy owl pics from Sunday. A few minutes after I first saw her, she decided to fly down for a snack at a deer carcass that was off the side of the road.

Side view of a female snowy owl on top of a deer carcass. She is bent over, picking at the deer with her beak, and her wings are spread out for balance.

She really had to work at that frozen deer to get something to eat!

I am so grateful I had a chance to see this gorgeous creature moving and interacting in the world — an incredible experience! I was also glad the other spectators there were being very respectful of her space.

  1. What neat photos of a snowy owl. Great! Much enjoyed, as well as the many other recent posted photos. Thanks for your views of a bit of Madison: in Jan. that I would not normally see.
