The snowy shadows of spring
When spring weather doesn’t arrive on time, there isn’t much to do except keep taking photos of winter.
No lifeguard on duty
It feels like it’s going to be a long time until the lifeguards make an appearance in Madison. While I was driving on the beltline this afternoon, I saw a bald eagle flying over the Yahara River. A sign of the continuing long winter, rather than the sign of spring I’d prefer to see.

Snow piles of March 2013
What a difference a year makes. In early March 2012, temperatures in Madison were in the mid 60’s. This year I’ve got snow piles at the end of my driveway that are over 60 inches tall.
I suppose there’s a kind of balance in there somewhere.

A good snow base, calm winds, and sunny skies, made for perfect snowshoeing weather this weekend. Yesterday I spent some time hiking around McCarthy County Park.

Sure, the snow looks beautiful when it’s freshly fallen.
But after a few weeks, the piles of snow along the driveways and roads start to look pretty ugly.

We got a lot of rain the other day, which is unusual for February. Although I was glad it wasn’t snow, I’ve done enough shoveling lately.
