A January caterpillar
This is a first for me, seeing a caterpillar in January! I found this wooly caterpillar crawling along the driveway, about a foot from my house (and a plant bed with unfrozen soil).
A poor owl substitute
Yesterday I ventured out looking for snowy owls, which have been seen widely in Wisconsin this winter. Unfortunately, the closest I came was capturing this American tree sparrow — a nice bird, but a poor substitute for a snowy owl.
Sculpted by the wind
I went hiking around Tenney Park yesterday. The wind along the lake was brutal, but it did create some cool snow drifts.
Looks like winter now
After a few inches of snow the past couple days, it finally looks like winter in Madison.
Bitter cold sunset
First bitter cold spell of the season also brought a nice sunset. Lake Monona freezing over quickly now.

Boxing day hike
Warm temperatures sent me out on a Boxing Day hike (Token Creek County Park). Sure was a nice change to see the sun shining for most of the day.
Longing for some solstice sun
In Madison, we’ve had close to three weeks of sunless sky. Add in the long hours of darkness, and my psyche is really hungry for some sunshine. As a remedy, I decided to post evidence of the star our planet circles, from an earlier and brighter day.
Thankfully, at least the amount of daylight starts to increase tomorrow. Happy solstice everyone.
