Common yellowthroat

May 28, 2025BirdsJonathan

A small yellow bird with a black 'mask' and a white streak on top of his head. It's perched on a tall, thin branch on the edge of a grassy marsh.

I’m not much of a birder, so it makes me happy when I’m able to capture a warbler — they move around so fast! This is a male common yellowthroat.

Infatuated with clouds

May 25, 2025SkyJonathan

Blue sky with many puffy, cumulus clouds over a prairie. Two trees are seen in the middle pf the prairie at the bottom of the photo.

We’ve had some idyllically pretty skies over Madison the past few days, thanks to those cumulus clouds.

Gone to seed

May 22, 2025Close Up, FlowersJonathan

Close up of a dandelion with a white puffy seed ball at the end of its stem, in front of green grass. In the foreground an ant can be seen crawling on one of the grass blades.

I came across these dandelions while hiking through the woods, and I couldn’t resist trying to capture their delicate beauty.

Gloomy day on the rooftop

May 20, 2025CityscapeJonathan

Water flows in a rooftop fountain. The state capitol dome is directly behind the fountain along with a few buildings, under a dark cloudy sky.

From the top of Monona Terrace, off the capitol square.

Shining like a beacon

May 17, 2025Flowers, HikingJonathan

A large trillium plant with a flower of three white petals growing in the middle of a forest.

As I hiked through the woods I could see a flash of white in the distance, almost shining like a beacon through the dense foliage. Getting closer, I could see what it was… a huge trillium blossom.

One tulip

May 14, 2025Flowers, QuotesJonathan

A lone tulip with pink petals and a yellow center, leaning open toward the camera. It's standing in a background of greenery and tiny white flowers.

“One tulip is like the next tulip, but not altogether. More or less like people – a general outline, then the stunning individual strokes.”

Evening shadows

May 11, 2025Bicycling, Black & White, ShadowsJonathan

Long shadows from a railing at the end of a bridge are cast along a paved trail. A stand of trees and a clear sky is in the background.

Along the Autumn Ridge path in Madison.

Tiny oak leaves

May 8, 2025Close Up, TreesJonathan

Cluster of several brand new, light green oak leaves with red outlines on the end of a branch, in front of a clear blue sky.

I find the tiny beginnings of tree leaves to be just as beautiful as spring flowers. These are brand new leaves from two different oak trees.

Valley of shadows

May 6, 2025Landscape, ShadowsJonathan

Long shadows reach across the grass of a small valley. In the background, a shadowy hillside with the late-afternoon sunshine illuminating some of its tree tops.
