Seen while out biking this evening. A fitting sight for the end of a beautiful summer day.
The Illinois Railway Museum has a fine collection of restored rolling stock. But I found their fleet of rusty and corroded steam locomotives to be much more fascinating.
This E9 diesel locomotive was manufactured in 1961, and originally served on the Milwaukee Road’s long-distance Hiawatha passenger service, traveling at speeds up to 95mph.
