A big question

October 17, 2024Black & White, Just for Fun, NightJonathan

A three story window on an outside wall of a building. A very large question mark, illuminated with orange lights hangs in the window. The question mark is the only thing in the photo that's in color, everything else in monochrome.

Unfortunately, I have no big answers. 😉
From the downtown branch of the Madison Public Library.

Autumnal panorama

October 15, 2024Landscape, PanoramaJonathan

Hillside lined with trees in various shades of orange, yellow, red, and some green. Dried prairie grass is in the foreground, and a few wispy clouds in a blue sky are overhead.

Red ribbons

October 13, 2024Aurora, SkyJonathan

A few large ribbons of red aurora light leading up from the horizon in a starry sky.

This vertical shot is my favorite of the photos I took Thursday night.

Northern lights through the camera

October 11, 2024Aurora, SkyJonathan

Display of aurora borealis above a tree line in silhouette. In the sky are shades of green, with some brushes of yellow and orange. Two red pillars of light are also seen.

This week southern Wisconsin was treated to two nights of aurora borealis. I missed Monday night’s show, so I was determined to get out there last night during the predicted solar storm.

Autumn color developing

October 9, 2024Autumn, Hiking, Landscape, TreesJonathan

Looking down on the shore of a lake under a blue sky. Trees starting to turn their autumn colors fill the countryside behind the shore. Large boulders are in the foreground.

Hiking along the east bluff trail at Devil’s Lake State Park yesterday, I saw the developing color from up high and in the middle of the forest. A beautiful place to spend an afternoon on such a beautiful day.

Waiting for the next train

October 7, 2024Birds, RailroadsJonathan

Sandhill crane standing next to railroad tracks.

When I saw these sandhill cranes, I imagined them patiently waiting to hop on the next train that comes along, and taking a nice ride through the countryside together.

Tenney Park bridge

October 5, 2024Autumn, LandscapeJonathan

Stone bridge over a lagoon, surrounded by trees that are starting to show some autumn color.

A peaceful moment on a warm autumn day.

Early autumn leaves

October 3, 2024Autumn, TreesJonathan

A cluster of red and yellow oak leaves in front of a blurred green background.

Did a little leaf peeping the other day.

Monarch butterfly perched on a group of purple aster blossoms.

Monarch butterfly.

Washburn Observatory

September 29, 2024ArchitectureJonathan

Brick building with a domed observatory under a mostly blue sky.

I’ve never been inside the U.W. Washburn Observatory. I should go to one of their public observation sessions, when they start up again (currently closed due to mechanical issues).
