November 11, 2024Bicycling, LandscapeJonathan

description

Since my bike will go into winter hibernation soon, a November ride under sunny skies is a welcome treat. Lower Yahara River Trail.

The milkweed’s patience

November 9, 2024Close Up, ThoughtsJonathan

Side view of a cluster of many seeds showing in an open milkweed seed pod.

I find it fascinating that in the end, milkweed plants put all of their energy into their seeds, only to have them wait to be released, wait for the wind to hopefully send them to fertile ground, wait through the winter, and wait to finally become a new milkweed plants in the spring.

Darkness

November 7, 2024Landscape, Politics, ThoughtsJonathan

A bare tree under dark grey, cloudy skies at dusk. In the background, several other bare trees can be seen in silhouette.

The usual November darkness seemed that much more dark, the day after Tuesday’s election. I’m trying hard to focus on positive things, I hope you’re able to do that as well.

The end of a tall piece of 'hairy' prairie grass. It's bent over in an arc shape.

Cedar waxwing

A cedar waxwing bird, perched on a tree branch. The branches in the photo have lost all their leaves for the season.

A warm October ride

October 31, 2024Autumn, BicyclingJonathan

A paved bike trail leads off into the distance, past two maple trees with dark orange leaves in a grassy park.

Bike ride on October 29th in 80 degree weather? Don’t mind if I do!

The zooms

October 29, 2024Abstract, Autumn, TreesJonathan

Streaks of yellow, orange, and green from leaves on trees converge in the center of the photograph. Vague outlines of a few thick tree branches can be seen.

I caught a case of the zooms the other day and created some abstracts.

Peak leaf

A line of orange and red trees in front of a walkway. Tall prairie grass is in the foreground.

I’m pretty sure we’ve reached peak leaf here in Madison.

Winterberries

October 25, 2024Autumn, FruitJonathan

Several clusters of red winterberries on branches in front of a blue sky. In the lower part of the background, out of focus, are trees with yellow and red autumn leaves.

Forest floor still life

October 23, 2024Autumn, Still LifeJonathan

On the ground of a dirt forest trail, a small red maple leaf lies on top of a yellow maple leave.
