Flyby

September 11, 2024SkyJonathan

An airplane flies high in the sky and leaves a long contrail along side the view of a thin, crescent moon. The moon and contrail are colored orange from the setting sun.

The beauty of the sky

September 9, 2024Lakes, Silhouette, SkyJonathan

Streaks of pastel colors in the sky over a lake. A woman in silhouette sits on a large rock in the foreground, watching the sunset.

I was grateful for the beauty of the sky the other night. Looks like I wasn’t the only one.

Mellow yellow

The blossom of a woodland sunflower. The background shows a field of yellow (from other flowers), out of focus.

Woodland sunflower.

Tiny turtle crossing

September 5, 2024ReptilesJonathan

Close up of a very small snapping turtle on the pavement.

I came across a baby snapping turtle on the bike trail the other day. I almost didn’t see it, their camouflage blended in perfectly with the pavement!

A hopeful sign

September 3, 2024Hiking, Still Life, ThoughtsJonathan

A large grey feather with white stripes, standing upright against some foliage on the forest floor.

When I find a feather while hiking, I always consider it a good omen — A hopeful sign of good things to come. I left this one lie where I found it, because it looked so beautiful there on the forest floor.

Goodnight August

September 1, 2024Prairie, Silhouette, SkyJonathan

An orange sky and setting sun can be seen through the silhouette of a wall of tall prairie grass.

Yesterday evening, August bid me a colorful goodnight through some tall grass.

Willow bark

August 31, 2024Texture, TreesJonathan

A section of tree bark that fills the entire frame. The bark has a very scraggly appearance, with thick and thin ridges going in many different directions.

Have you ever noticed the wonderful texture of willow tree bark? This shot makes me want to start a series of tree bark photos.

Happiness is a butterfly

August 29, 2024Insects, QuotesJonathan

Top view of a monarch butterfly perched on a tree branch with its wings spread open.

“Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.”

Waxahatchee

August 26, 2024Concerts, MusicJonathan

A five piece band performs as multi-colored lights illuminate the stage.

Saturday night I went to see Waxahatchee perform at the Sylvee in Madison. It was the best concert I’ve been to in a long while.

Squirrel looking straight at the camera from behind some debris on the forest floor.

I met a new friend on the hiking trail.
