Gulf Fritillary Butterfly

August 20, 2024InsectsJonathan

A mostly white spotted butterfly, also adorned with black, and vibrant orange and brown colors, perched on the top of a leaf. It's looking right at the camera with the top half of its body showing above the leaf.

This colorful beauty was my favorite of the butterflies I saw at the Olbrich Gardens Blooming Butterflies exhibit. I like to think they were looking back at me with the same fascination I had for them.

Black squirrel

August 16, 2024MammalsJonathan

A squirrel with all black fur, clinging to the side of a tree.

Something I’ve never seen in Wisconsin before! I discovered that black squirrels are not a separate species, but have black fur due to a hereditary overabundance of melanin. This black beauty is an eastern gray squirrel.

Hairy woodpecker on the side of a pine tree. Its head is blurred showing the motion of it hammering at the tree bark, looking for insects.

Anyone else feel a headache coming on?

Sundown at Tomahawk Lake

August 4, 2024Lakes, SkyJonathan

Orange sun just about to set over a lake in a sky. A line of sunlight is reflected in the water toward the camera. The scene is framed with silhouettes of foliage.

The two best sunsets I was fortunate to see, when I was camping last month.
