The solar storm’s second night

May 15, 2024Aurora, SkyJonathan

A green ribbon of light running diagonally through the night sky, with a touch of yellow on one end.

Went aurora chasing again Saturday night. What I saw was much more limited to the north area of the sky (compared to the previous night). It peaked about 11:30pm, and didn’t last very long. Still, another awesome experience.

Wrapped with a bow

May 13, 2024Aurora, SkyJonathan

Red, green, and yellow streaks of light arise from behind a line of trees into a star filled sky.

At one point during Friday night’s sky show, there were ribbons of light that went all the way from the south-east to north-west horizons. It was as if the world was wrapped up in a big colorful bow.

Sky full of wonder

Large streaks of green color, and streaks of orangish-yellow in the night sky behind two tree silhouettes in the foreground.

A few photos from last night’s aurora borealis, taken from Token Creek County Park.

Yellow warbler

May 9, 2024BirdsJonathan

A yellow warbler, perched on a branch looking at the camera.

I’m not much of a birder, but this post encapsulates my experience with warblers. Get a glimpse of them, and the next second, they turn away and are gone. It was lucky I got these two shots!

Red admiral butterflies

May 7, 2024InsectsJonathan

Close up of an orange and brown butterfly with white spots, perched on a cluster of small yellow flowers.

I’ve seen a LOT of these red admiral butterflies around this spring. Finally had a few sit still long enough for some photos.

Great egret flight

May 5, 2024BirdsJonathan

Side view of a great egret flying. In the background are some buildings out of focus.

I’ve been trying to get better at capturing birds in flight. It’s a little easier with larger birds like this egret.

Trailing under grey skies

May 3, 2024Bicycling, SkyJonathan

A bike trail leads past a tree and into the distance. Overhead are dramatic, grey, cloudy skies.

Peony tulips in monochrome

Black and white close up of the center of a flower with many petals emanating from the middle.

Beautiful even without their color.

Tulips at the Capitol

April 28, 2024Bicycling, FlowersJonathan

A bed of red and yellow tulips in front of the Forward Statue and the lower part of the Wisconsin State Capitol building.

I biked over to the Capitol yesterday to find the tulips there pretty much in peak bloom.
