Fleeting beauty

September 28, 2022Autumn, Flowers, ThoughtsJonathan

A black-eyed Susan blossom with shriveled, brown petals.

Enjoy and appreciate beauty while you can, for it may soon be gone. Feeling a little introspective today…

September gold

September 19, 2022Autumn, FlowersJonathan

Goldenrod blossom in large goldenrod prairie. A grove of trees is in the background

I used to think those huge fields of goldenrod were to blame for the severe seasonal allergies I experience this time of year. I recently learned that goldenrod does not cause allergies. Pollen from the inconspicuously drab ragweed flowers (which appear at the same time) is the culprit.

All those goldenrod blossoms look a little more beautiful to me now.

Early sunsets, with hazy smoke

September 16, 2022Bicycling, SkyJonathan

Silhouette of a bicycle and shore rocks, in front of an orange, yellow and hazy blue sky.

The sun set at 7:08pm last night. I need to start my evening rides early these days!

Rainy night reflections

September 13, 2022Cityscape, Night, Rain, ReflectionsJonathan

Traffic signals and brake lights from stopped vehicles are reflected in the wet pavement. Silhouettes of buildings and a crane are in the background under a twilight blue sky.

Wilco at the Sylvee

September 11, 2022Concerts, LifeJonathan

Six musicians performing on a stage bathed in blue light. A decorative banner with the word 'WILCO' is behind them.

On Friday night I saw the band Wilco perform at The Sylvee here in Madison. Wilco is one of my favorite bands, this was the eighth show of theirs I’ve been to. Every concert I’ve seen them perform has ALWAYS been fantastic, and Friday night was no exception.

Perseverance

September 8, 2022Quotes, TreesJonathan

Looking up from the base of a large oak tree, showing the large, textured trunk, and the branches high above.

“An oak tree is just a small nut that persevered against the taunts of doubt and fear.”

Japanese anemone

September 6, 2022FlowersJonathan

White flower with a yellow and green center.

I can always count on a visit to Olbrich Botanical Gardens to brighten up a dreary day. Japanese anemone (a.k.a. Japanese thimbleweed)

Last of the summer shadows?

September 3, 2022Shadows, Silhouette, Thoughts, TreesJonathan

Several trees in silhouette as the setting sun behind them casts long shadows toward the camera.

The local public schools started this week and the sun is setting earlier and earlier each day. I think I’m starting to mourn the end of summer.
