Icy variations

January 2, 2023Abstract, Lakes, Snow & IceJonathan

A diptych of two photos of lake ice with dramatically different patterns.

It’s fascinating how thawing and freezing cycles can produce such different patterns in the lake ice, so close together. These two shots were taken just a few feet from each other on Lake Mendota.

Follow the sun

December 29, 2022Black & White, Hiking, Quotes, Snow & IceJonathan

Winding hiking trail leading up a snow covered hill. The sun shines down from the middle of the sky.

“For tomorrow may rain, so I’ll follow the sun.”

Boxing Day sunset

December 27, 2022Sky, Snow & IceJonathan

A streaky orange sky over a frozen lake. There's a tree in silhouette in the foreground, and the Madison skyline in the distance.

First time catching a sunset in a long time. I think I made up for that by taking too many photos.

Follow the lights

December 22, 2022Architecture, Black & White, LightJonathan

Looking down a long, dark, marble hallway lined with decorative wall sconce lights. At the end of the hall, a glass door it lit from outside light.

Good winter solstice advice, brought to you by a hallway in the State Capitol.

A Capitol Christmas

December 19, 2022Architecture, TreesJonathan

Looking up from the base of a large Christmas tree in the State Capitol.

The official Wisconsin holiday tree always looks so pretty in this gorgeous building.

Wingra ice

December 17, 2022Lakes, Snow & IceJonathan

Swirling ice patters and a small bit of open water of a lake. Snow covered trees and brush line the shore/.

Lake Wingra almost frozen over.

The view from above

December 15, 2022ArchitectureJonathan

Looking down at the Capitol rotunda from the highest walkway.

As high as you can get inside the Capitol dome.

Angles and light

December 13, 2022Architecture, LightJonathan

View looking down from the second floor of a grand, three-story, marble stairway. Ornamental wall sconces line the walls, and the interior of the Capital dome can be seen in the background.

The other day I went to the Capitol with the intention of photographing the Christmas tree. I found myself wandering the building and marveling at the wonderful architecture (like the light and angles of this stairway).

Close up of short grass blades, each covered with a coating of ice.

From a cold and windy day along Lake Mendota.

Cowabunga!

December 7, 2022BirdsJonathan

Seven mallard ducks along the crest of a fairly large wave on a lake.

I like to think these ducks were just having fun on the lake here, getting tossed around by wave after wave.
