Watch out woolly bears!

October 14, 2021Bicycling, InsectsJonathan

Black and brown caterpillar crawling across a gravel trail

Saw all kinds of woolly bear caterpillars on the trail while biking the other day. It was a challenge to avoid running them over! This one had a pretty wide rusty-brown band, so if one believes the folklore, it should be a mild winter in southern Wisconsin.

New glasses

Head shot of Jonathan Bloy standing indoors next to a window

New glasses means it’s time for a portrait of my “new” face.

Biking thru early autumn color

October 10, 2021Autumn, Bicycling, LandscapeJonathan

Maple trees with yellow, orange, and green leaves over a recreational trail

I took advantage of the beautiful, summer-in-October weather yesterday, and spent the afternoon biking on the Military Ridge State Trail. Some autumn colors out there, but still pretty early for peak.

Two sandhill cranes facing each other, while standing in front of a marshy area.

These sandhill cranes were kind enough to pause for a portrait.

Autumn ride

October 3, 2021Autumn, Bicycling, Landscape, LifeJonathan

Boardwalk trail extends over a river, next to a railroad bridge. Trees and foliage in autumn colors are along the river shore and in the background

A long bike ride yesterday gave me some much needed outdoor time. I’ve learned over the years that if I don’t spend enough time outside, I can start to feel out of sorts. Some people ground themselves by meditating. Being out in nature, like biking the Lower Yahara River Trail, helps me accomplish that.

Tree canopy of mostly green leaves with a couple of branches of yellow and orange leaves in the center

Still a lot of green out there, but it won’t last long. Welcome to October.

After the blooms are done

September 30, 2021Autumn, FlowersJonathan

Dried stems and structures of flowers after the petals have died and fallen away, standing in a forest.

Interesting to see what’s left of summer blooms long after they’ve blossomed, like this Queen Anne’s lace.

Monona gold

September 27, 2021Lakes, SkyJonathan

Yellow and orange clouds in the sky with those colors reflected in the water of a lake. On the side is a hill and trees in silhouette, and on the distant shore is the city skyline

Last night’s sunset over Lake Monona.

Autumn blossoms

white flower with a deep yellow center in front of a blurred green background

More flowers from Olbrich Botanical Gardens. We’ve got to enjoy these while we can, they won’t be around much longer.

Early autumn on State Street

September 22, 2021Autumn, Cityscape, Landscape, TreesJonathan

Trees with yellow leaves line a street that leads to the State Capitol building.

The yellows are always the first to really come on strong. Happy autumnal equinox from Madison!
