Winter nature walk

January 12, 2022Hiking, Trees, WinterJonathan

Bare ash tree along a snow covered hiking trail next to a lake. Grey streaky clouds radiate from the sun barely showing behind the tree.

“In every walk with nature one receives more than he seeks.” – John Muir

Wintering eagles

January 4, 2022Birds, RiversJonathan

Bald eagle soaring with its wings spread, in a blue sky with some light clouds.

When the cold weather hits, it’s time to go bald eagle watching along the Wisconsin River. Since area lakes are frozen, the eagles congregate here for the winter, where they can catch fish.

Snow shadows

January 2, 2022Shadows, Snow & IceJonathan

Shadows of bare trees reach diagonally across a smooth section of snow.

Leaving the warm, cozy house to capture some winter shadows on a very cold day? Worth it.

What stirs beneath?

December 30, 2021Lakes, Snow & IceJonathan

Ice on a pond with cracks leading out from a small circle of open water. Bubbles are coming up from below in the center of the water.

Today I’m wondering… what’s stirring beneath the surface?

Winter arrives

December 28, 2021Black & White, Snow & Ice, WinterJonathan

Snow falls on a scene of snow covered foliage next to a ravine. Trees, snow covered ground, and houses are in the background.

Madison finally got some decent snowfall — about three and a half inches on the ground right now.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve…

December 24, 2021Fog & Mist, RiversJonathan

The view of a small river with trees on either side, covered in dense fog.

Definitely a different kind of white Christmas.

Happy Solstice!

December 21, 2021Shadows, SkyJonathan

A long shadow of a man standing next to a nature trail with brown and dried plants, lit by the late afternoon sun.

On this day of the longest shadows, may your coming days be brighter and brighter.

State holiday tree

December 17, 2021Architecture, TreesJonathan

Holiday tree in the rotunda of the Capitol. The tree is decorated with lights and ornaments, and a model train circles the base.

The Wisconsin State Capitol looking very festive these days.

Mother Nature’s art

December 14, 2021Lakes, SkyJonathan

Pink, red, orange, and yellow streaky clouds over a lake at dusk. The colors are reflected in the water. In the foreground is a bare tree and the shoreline are in silhouette.

Yesterday evening along Lake Monona: Another awe-inspiring piece of artwork from Mother Nature.

Tundra swans

December 12, 2021BirdsJonathan

Side view of a tundra swan floating on a lake, stretching their wings.

If you’re a migrating tundra swan, Lake Monona is pretty good spot to rest and stretch your wings.
