Happy Solstice!

December 21, 2021Shadows, SkyJonathan

A long shadow of a man standing next to a nature trail with brown and dried plants, lit by the late afternoon sun.

On this day of the longest shadows, may your coming days be brighter and brighter.

Mother Nature’s art

December 14, 2021Lakes, SkyJonathan

Pink, red, orange, and yellow streaky clouds over a lake at dusk. The colors are reflected in the water. In the foreground is a bare tree and the shoreline are in silhouette.

Yesterday evening along Lake Monona: Another awe-inspiring piece of artwork from Mother Nature.

Tundra swans

December 12, 2021BirdsJonathan

Side view of a tundra swan floating on a lake, stretching their wings.

If you’re a migrating tundra swan, Lake Monona is pretty good spot to rest and stretch your wings.

Waiting for a strong wind

December 10, 2021Life, Still Life, ThoughtsJonathan

The top half of single oak leaf stands straight up in the middle of a large metal grate.

When I came across this oak leaf trapped in a large grate, it resonated with how I’ve been feeling lately. Like this leaf, sometimes I think many of us just need a strong wind to lift us up a bit, so we can carry on our way. May you find that strong wind when you need it.

Another unique sunset

November 30, 2021SkyJonathan

Purple and blue clouds above an orange colored band of sky. The downtown Madison skyline can be seen from across a lake.

Much like snowflakes, it seems that no two sunsets are ever alike. I felt fortunate to witness this unique one last night. After a completely cloudy day, the clouds started to clear as the sun went down in Madison.

Winter sign

A fallen tree on the shore of a lake that isn't frozen. It's covered with a layer of ice. The bottom side of the tree is lined with icicles above the water.

It was cold along the shore of Lake Mendota today. Winter is coming…

Grey squirrels

Side view of a grey squirrel on a tree branch.

I came across several grey squirrels while out on a hike. Some seemed just as interested in me as I was in them.

Art from Mother Nature

November 12, 2021Autumn, Still LifeJonathan

A brown oak leaf centered on top of a large yellow basswood leaf, laying on the ground among other oak leaves.

I came across this perfectly framed piece of seasonal art while on a hike. Honest! I did not arrange it at all.
