The Sturgeon Moon

An orange tinted full moon in a dark sky

Did you catch the moon last night? It was absolutely stunning. The full moon in August is called the Sturgeon Moon.

Large sunflower blossom towering above the other plants in a garden

Nothing like some living sunshine to brighten the day.

A perfect summer day

August 16, 2021Bicycling, Cityscape, Landscape, ThoughtsJonathan

A recreational trail next to a lake with a view of the Madison skyline on opposite shore.

I took advantage of yesterday’s perfect summer weather to go on a long bike ride through the city. If only we could store beautiful days like that and bring them out when needed. How good would it be to experience a perfect summer day deep in the middle of winter? At least we’ll still have our memories to ponder, and photos to gaze at.

Loon swimming in the water next to a slightly out-of-focus loon chick

A common loon and her chick. This was the best wildlife sighting I had on my camping trip (though admittedly, the photos aren’t the best).

Trout Lake sunsets

August 8, 2021Lakes, Silhouette, SkyJonathan

An orange sun just over the horizon giving a calm lake a brilliant orange color. The scene is visible through pine tree branches in silhouette.

A couple of sunsets from my time at Trout Lake in northern Wisconsin. Smoke from western wildfires having a big influence on the sky lately.

Amazed by the Black Lagoon

August 4, 2021Camping, Hiking, Lakes, LandscapeJonathan

Scenic view of pine trees surrounding a very still lagoon reflecting the trees

I took a camping vacation last week in Northern Wisconsin, where I had to visit my favorite spot in the whole state: The Black Lagoon on the Star Lake Nature Trail.. I must have hiked that trail and visited that spot at least a couple dozen times, but every time I see it, I am just as amazed as I was the first.
