Napping on thin ice

December 23, 2020Birds, RiversJonathan

A flock of mallard ducks napping together on thin ice

When it’s a cold, grey day, and the creek you’re hanging out on is starting to freeze over, a group nap makes things a little better.

Solstice shadow

December 21, 2020Shadows, SkyJonathan

Tree shadow in the snow, in front of a hill with trees at the top

A shadow from today’s noon-time sun, taken just before the clouds rolled in. Happy winter solstice!

The cardinal’s winter red

December 18, 2020BirdsJonathan

A red cardinal perched in the middle of some branches

Seeing a northern cardinal showing off that vivid red is a welcome sight in the middle of winter, when bright colors are so rare.

December 3, 2020Snow & Ice, WinterJonathan

Thin layer of ice on a lagoon with a bank of trees on the opposite side

While on a walk, I found a thin layer of ice on the Vilas Park Lagoon and some frost on the boardwalk. Winter is coming.

Downy woodpecker

November 30, 2020BirdsJonathan

Downy woodpecker perched on top of a large branch

I felt lucky this woodpecker paused in the open for this photo. I ended up with quite a few outtakes (like below), following her while she jumped around looking for treats in the trees.

The beautiful moon

November 28, 2020Astronomy, SkyJonathan

An almost full moon in darkening skies next to some tree branches

I never tire of the moon’s beauty when I see it in the sky.
