Milkweed seeds emerging

October 8, 2025Close Up, InsectsJonathan

Milkweed seed pod about halfway open, with some silky seeds packed inside, and a few on the outside, waiting for the wind.

Milkweed seeds are starting to emerge. Seems to have drawn some boxelder bug interest.

Ch…Ch…Changes

October 6, 2025Autumn, TreesJonathan

A cluster of oak leaves on a tree. The tips of the leaves are all a vibrant red, with the remaining part of the leaves being green with touches of yellow.

It’s beginning to look like autumn around here.

Piers

October 4, 2025Lakes, QuotesJonathan

A pier juts out into a lake, under a blue sky with some wispy clouds. Tall lake grass is in the foreground on both sides of the pier.

“Piers are good places for pondering the eternal enigmas of the universe.”

Taking time to breathe

September 27, 2025Lakes, Life, Silhouette, SkyJonathan

The sun just over the horizon above the far shore of a lake. Tall lake grass is in silhouette in the foreground and the sky has a deep orange color.

It’s been a stressful couple of months. Fitting that my first real photo outing in quite a while was last night’s sunset. Things always seem better when you take time to breathe, and savor the beauty that’s in front of you.

The balafon

September 10, 2025Life, Music, Still LifeJonathan

Two mallets laying crossed on top of the wooden keys of a balafon.

I acquired a new instrument! Back when I was a percussionist in high school and college, the mallet instruments (marimba, xylophone) were my favorites to play. I’ve been wanting to play one of those melodic instruments again, and with my interest in African music, a balafon was the perfect choice.

Evening sun dog

September 4, 2025SkyJonathan

The setting sun glows through streaky clouds. To the right of the sun is a bright spot of rainbow hues in the clouds. A grassy lawn a two small trees are in the foreground along the shore of a lake.

The brisk temps, clouds (and strong wind!) brought a sun dog to the sky yesterday evening.
