The hiking trails along the southeastern edge of Big Bay State Park (where I camped on Madeline Island) provide excellent views of the granite rocks that line the shore of Lake Superior there.

Atop Gibraltar Rock
On Memorial Day I went hiking at Gibraltar Rock, a state natural area connected to Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail. It was my first time there — the views are amazing.

Shaconage, the Cherokee name for the area of the Smoky Mountains means “land of blue smoke.”
