I took a camping vacation last week in Northern Wisconsin, where I had to visit my favorite spot in the whole state: The Black Lagoon on the Star Lake Nature Trail.. I must have hiked that trail and visited that spot at least a couple dozen times, but every time I see it, I am just as amazed as I was the first.

View more →While out on a hike, I noticed a feather on the trail and picked it up. From some kind of sparrow maybe?
As I walked along the trail carrying the feather, I pondered how much of its existence was spent flying through the air. When I got to the trail’s observation tower, I thought it would be appropriate to put the feather back in the sky where it belonged (well, as high as I could place it). So I left it perched on the railing of the tower.
Today marks the 40th Anniversary of the Ice Age Trail becoming an official National Scenic Trail. The other day, I hiked a portion of the trail in the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Some popular Wisconsin and National parks have seen crowds of people lately, making it difficult to maintain that social distancing during the current pandemic. Hoping to avoid that, I took advantage of the nice day by driving to a lesser known spot, New Glarus Woods State Park.
