Despite the continuing below-normal temperatures, I needed to connect with the outdoors today. Late this afternoon, I visited a frozen Lake Monona.

Many years ago, I had a film single lens reflex camera. SLRs are great for their flexibility, allowing you to change lenses, add filters, and manually adjust settings. For a while now, I’ve been wishing for some of that flexibility in a digital camera, and have been thinking about buying a digital SLR. Early last month, a local camera store was having a sale on the Nikon D40 — a deal I couldn’t pass up.

Yesterday I visited Parfrey’s Glen, a State Natural Area close to Devil’s Lake State Park.

Great River Bluffs
While I was camping last week, I took a day trip across the Mississippi River to Great River Bluffs State Park in Minnesota.
The above view of Queen’s Buff is your reward after about a mile hike through the woods. My jaw just dropped as I emerged from the forest and saw the spectacular scene.
Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge
About two miles north of where I was camping last week, was the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge.
