And so it begins…

A cool place to sit
Awaiting winter’s end
Eagle watching
I went eagle watching along the Wisconsin River today.
I had no idea the jet was in the frame with the above bald eagle, until I got home.
Ice scraper needed
As I was shooting these two photos from the same corner, I imagined a telephone conversation going on while the wind and snow were adding to the frustration.
“Can you bring me an ice scraper? I can’t get in my van.”
Sunset skyline
I believe this is the first time I’ve ever taken pictures of a sunset during the winter. I guess the lesson is, you’re not going to get good photos if you don’t get out there.
An open letter to Mother Nature
Dear Mother Nature,
Thank you for all the snow over the past several weeks. It really does makes everything look beautiful. Unfortunately, I am beginning to run out of places to put it when I shovel my driveway.
Would you mind holding off on the snow for a while, say maybe until some of it melts? That would be great. Thanks.
Your friend,
Jonathan
Roof rake? Check.
Yesterday I had another new home owner’s experience. I bought a roof rake and cleared the snow from the bottom portion of my roof.
Winter in Vilas Park
Yesterday I headed over to Vilas Park to hike around a bit. I wasn’t the only one taking advantage of winter recreation there.
Cold thoughts
A few random thoughts inspired by the brutally cold weather we’ve been having…
1. I saw a few finches hanging out and chirping in a tree outside the building at work this morning. When I see small creatures like that surviving in sub-zero temperatures, I’m just amazed. How does such a little, warm blooded animal generate enough heat to keep from freezing to death?
2. Do you ever wonder about the Native peoples that populated this area hundreds and thousands of years ago? How on Earth did they get along in their wigwams during bitter cold spells? Makes it hard to complain when you imagine what they had to deal with, doesn’t it?
3. Often during bad winter storms, or below zero temps, some people invariably proclaim they’re ready to move south. When I hear that I think, “no thank you.” Moving in that direction means more heat and humidity in the summer. As bad as winter can get in Wisconsin, I’d rather deal with extreme cold and snow than extreme heat and humidity.
