The Wisconsin State Capitol on a cloudy, grey day. Part of the Capitol is reflected in a glass building on one side of the photo.

Christmas zoomies

December 26, 2024AbstractJonathan

Streaks of multi-colored light from a Christmas tree as well as building lights converge in center of a photograph.

A couple of abstracts of the state holiday tree in the Capitol.

Capitol holiday beauty

December 24, 2024Architecture, TreesJonathan

A Christmas tree in the Capitol. Archways and the start of a decorated dome is seen behind the tree. A woman stands on a second floor balcony admiring the tree.

The State Capitol is a beautiful building any time of the year, but it’s especially so during the holidays.

Solstice candle

December 22, 2024Bokeh, Close Up, Light, NightJonathan

A single candle is lit beneath some holiday lights in the shape of a five-pointed star.

To document yesterday’s winter solstice and the longest night of the year, I lit a candle in front the holiday lights in my window. A blessed solstice to all! May you enjoy the longer days of light that are to come.

Nothing stronger than a winter tree

December 20, 2024Black & White, Quotes, Trees, WinterJonathan

A large oak tree with branches hanging over a curved road with fresh snow. Snow is also on the tree branches, and on the other trees and brush which line the road.

“There is nothing stronger than a winter tree,
No wind blows against it,
It is fierce beyond love.
There is nothing stronger than a winter tree,
and nowhere more secure.”

From Mary Oliver’s The Winter Wood Arrives.

Pinkney Street

December 13, 2024Architecture, CityscapeJonathan

Two steel and glass buildings (nine and eleven stories) on opposite sides of the street. Both have a curved, concave side which faces the street.

The design of the two buildings on this block (looking southeast from Doty Street) is fascinating. Were they intentionally created to mirror each other? Someday, I just might have to get up early and capture the sunrise here.

Looking for dinner

December 10, 2024BirdsJonathan

Hawk, perched in the middle of several tree branches. Their head is turned so they're facing just to the right of the camera, looking down over their shoulder.

I almost missed this hawk perched up there in the trees, they were well hidden!

Flying into sunset

December 7, 2024Birds, Silhouette, SkyJonathan

Silhouettes of eight tundra swans flying away from the camera in an orange sunset sky with streaky yellow clouds. Puffy, deep orange clouds are below the flying swans.

I suppose if I were a tundra swan, and a beautiful sunset appeared, I’d fly up off the water, and head toward the center of that deep orange sky too.

Getting the shot

December 5, 2024Architecture, Black & White, Just for FunJonathan

A man holding a camera high above his head, facing the main entrance of Monona Terrace.

As I was about to take a photo of the Monona Terrace Convention Center, I noticed another photographer in the distance, reaching high to get the shot he wanted. I couldn’t resist zooming in and capturing him in that pose.
