Just keep still

June 14, 2022MammalsJonathan

Close up of the head of a grey squirrel, clinging to the side of a tree.

Maybe if I keep very still, I’ll blend in with the tree and the human won’t notice.

High Cliff limestone

June 12, 2022Geology, LandscapeJonathan

A pointed tower of limestone rock stands next to wall of limestone under a forest canopy.

Limestone formations along the western edge of High Cliff State Park. My favorite spot in the park.

Invasive beauty

June 9, 2022FlowersJonathan

Close up of white blossoms with purple accents, in a field of similar purple flowers.

Dame’s rocket is a beautiful wildflower, unfortunately it’s also an invasive species. This section of Calumet County Park is a perfect example of how easily it can spread and choke out native plant life.

Standing tall

June 7, 2022BirdsJonathan

Large bird standing straight up in front of some dense, green folliage.

Great blue heron. After standing there for a minute or two, they decided it was time to look for some lunch in the pond.

Looking for sunshine

June 6, 2022Prairie, Sky, ThoughtsJonathan

Storm clouds loom over a prairie. In the distance, a few rays of the sun shine down through a small break in the clouds.

When dark clouds are overhead, look for the rays of sunshine. The sun is shining somewhere, even if you don’t see it.

Evening scenes at High Cliff

June 4, 2022Camping, SkyJonathan

Orange sunset sky over a lake, seen from the top of an observation tower with trees in the foreground.

I spent most of the past week camping at High Cliff State Park. Sure is good for my soul to get away and spend some extended time in nature.

Close up of blueish-purple lilac blossoms.

Pity I can’t include the scent here along with the photos.

Prairie art

May 23, 2022Art & Culture, Black & WhiteJonathan

Silhouette of a metal sign depicting several kinds of prairie plants, insects, a farm, a human hand, animal hoof & paw prints, and a sandhill crane.

I usually take pictures of the flora and fauna when I visit the UW Arboretum. But this metal piece of art, in front of the Curtis Prairie, caught my eye.
