Arboretum green

May 21, 2022Landscape, Spring, TreesJonathan

Looking down from a hillside. The grass is green and the trees all have leaves on them.

It does my heart good to see the landscape so green these days. U.W. Arboretum.

Sand cherry

May 15, 2022Flowers, SpringJonathan

Cluster of very small, white and pink blossoms on a shrub with reddish leaves.

Another spring blossom from my yard.

Bleeding hearts

May 11, 2022Flowers, Life, Spring, ThoughtsJonathan

Close up of red, heart-shaped blossoms hanging on a vine. The blossoms are open at the base and have a part hanging at the bottom, which looks like a drop of blood.

The bleeding hearts in my yard carry a lot of symbolism for me this year, for a few reasons. They’ve lasted longer than expected this spring, which is fittingly symbolic as well. Hoping for brighter days ahead as these blossoms fade for the season.

Maple renewal

May 9, 2022Spring, TreesJonathan

A cluster of tiny, new maple leaves, growing on the end of a branch.

Trees are coming to life again — feels like a long time coming this year.

A tall, thin white bird with a long neck is perched on a log in the middle of a creek

Great egrets hanging out along Wingra Creek, looking for lunch no doubt.

In the stacks

May 5, 2022Black & White, LibrariesJonathan

A student stands in the middle of a row of library bookshelves, looking at a book.

Horned Grebe

May 3, 2022BirdsJonathan

A bird swimming in the water. It has a black head with golden tufts and a red eye. Its body is rust colored with some black feathers on the back.

Seeing a horned grebe is a first for me. They only pass through Wisconsin during migration. I love its earthy color scheme.

Striped squill

May 1, 2022Flowers, SpringJonathan

Close up of a grouping of small white flowers with light blue stripes, growing among some green shoots.

A favorite spring sight — squill flowers carpeting a large area.

Wired

April 28, 2022Black & White, CityscapeJonathan

A utility pole with a number of wires leading away from it.

Owlet update

April 25, 2022BirdsJonathan

An owlet sitting in a nest, which is in the crook of a tree.

I went back to visit the great horned owlet over the weekend. They’re definitely growing! Starting to look more like an adult.
