April 25, 2022BirdsJonathan

An owlet sitting in a nest, which is in the crook of a tree.

I went back to visit the great horned owlet over the weekend. They’re definitely growing! Starting to look more like an adult.

First ride of 2022

April 22, 2022Bicycling, Lakes, SkyJonathan

The sun sets just above the horizon of a lake, behind the handlebars and front wheel of a bicycle.

Yesterday evening I finally got my bicycle out of its winter hibernation! It felt so good be out pedaling again — something I really miss during the colder months.

Singing cardinal

April 19, 2022Jonathan

Male cardinal in a tree. Its head is tilted up and its beak is open as it sings.

Close up of the head and shoulders of an owlet sitting in a nest, looking off to the right.

There’s been a great horned owl’s nest with an owlet in a nearby park, in a pretty visible spot. I’ve visited a few times so far, and these are the best shots I’ve taken.

Four small yellow flowers grow out of the ground along with a few chutes of grass.

Finally! Some seasonally appropriate weather, and a little spring color.

Loons on Monona Bay

April 9, 2022Birds, LakesJonathan

Side view of a common loon floating in the water.

It was a perfect day to hang out with the common loons — my favorite bird. Feel so grateful that they stop by Madison on their way north. Pity I didn’t hear any loon calls.

April 6, 2022Close Up, FlowersJonathan

Dried remnants of a Queen Anne's Lace blossom, in the middle of a prairie. A row of bare trees stand in the background.

The remains of a Queen Anne’s lace flower, from last year.

The browns and greys of early spring

Bare trees and marsh grass under cloudy skies, all reflected in a pond.

Awaiting some greens, at Cherokee Marsh.
